This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to set up, operate and adjust multi-headed machines to dress timber in a timber processing facility. Work also involves evaluating and monitoring dressing conditions and processes and operator maintenance.

The unit applies to individuals who work as operators of multi-headed machines for dressing timber. Operators generally work under broad or limited direction to complete routine activities related to their own work, and take responsibility for their work.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Tasks

Identify sizes and quantities for dressed timber, assess available sawn timber and estimate material removal rates 
Use equipment according to workplace health and safety procedures, manufacturer instructions and environmental protection practices 
Lock out equipment and set and adjust cutters, feeders, guides and conveyors to suit required dressed product dimensions and available sawn material 
Complete trial run to check equipment operation, accuracy and quality and dimensions of finished work 
Accept or reject trialled material and dispose of according to environmental protection practices 
Adjust equipment settings as necessary 
Select and follow the cutting sequence to maximise volume recovery and produce the required dimensions and quantity 
Maintain feed rate appropriate to timber condition and size 
Assess dressing conditions regularly to ensure continuity of supply and processing 
Adjust conditions to optimise feed rate and maintain finished dimensions according to work order 
Regularly evaluate and measure dressed timber dimensions and make adjustments to ensure product quality and required dimensions 
Dispose of incorrect cuts, off-cuts and defective material according to environmental protection practices 
Lock out equipment according to workplace health and safety procedures 
Check cutter for bluntness or damage 
Remove and replace cutters and blades according to manufacturer recommendations 
Dispose of used cutters according to environmental protection practices 
Keep machine area clear of dust and debris according to workplace health and safety procedures 
Record and report production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel
